One thing about Michigan that I never noticed as much in California is the bullshit inter-collegiate rivalry.

One of my co-workers recently got accepted to U of M which...good for him. I don't give a shit. Congrats and stop blocking the fucking coffeepot already.

Natch, he has to put some banner or pennant...possibly a shrine to Bo Schembechler...something to proclaim his awesome U of M-ness. And, natch, some asshole has to come by and say "Hey, congrats on getting into U of M...but MSU is better."

Then "friendly" "clever" banter ensues.

Seriously, get over it. Or at least make it not so banal for the rest of us who don't give the tiniest of shits whatsoever.

MM, a friend C worked with went to U of M and she used to bring in maize & blue colored buckeye candies in to the department's pot luck during "Beat Michigan Week." (Hand to god this is what it is called.)

Maybe actuaries just have better senses of humor than the office trolls MM has to put up with.

I found out that my prize for the grad student award is $500. I think I'm going to use it to buy a new desk that I've been wanting for a while but held off on buying because it was too expensive. (I seriously dislike my current desk. It's an old Ikea desk made of actual wood, not particle board, which has lasted through about ten years and five owners and will probably last another ten years, but it's way too big for my apartment, and it's light wood, while everything else I own is dark wood. So if anyone in the DC area wants a free desk, big enough for a 17" monitor, in kind of gold-colored wood, let me know.)
