How many people leave a cash tip in their hotel room for the housekeepers?

This is the only one I do. P-C, you leave ~$2 a day. I'll leave $5 for a weekend.

1) Yes--usuallly $3 a day, or $5 at the end of a stay or if they've done something special like leave extra towels, or cleaned up a heinous mess.

2) Slip on shoes, usually of the trainer variety.

Well, you'll probably be all right around dinner time. I think it only gets bad late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. (They've done a special financial something to pay for extra policing. I ignored the details and just made a note to make sure I avoided 18th and Columbia at those times.)

Always. I've done that job. When you can, please be kind. Sometimes people would leave pop magazines they were done with. I always enjoyed that too.

But more than money? The thing that made me squeal with glee was walking into a room where the occupant had pulled the sheets off the bed and piled them by the door with the skanky towels.

That small action may only have saved me a few seconds labor, but it made me feel like me and the anonymous stranger I was cleaning up after were in it together. Absolute gold.

Totally depends.

Never. These days I always wear shoes I can slip on and off easily.

This last trip, I brought a bar of chocolate each for 5-6 people I work with most, and a box of fleur de sel caramels that I left out for everyone.

Adams Morgan late on a Friday or Saturday though - it seems to have gotten kind of rough (drunks picking fights, driving, etc.).

Nah, just avoid being there when the bars close. That's bad. Though honestly, I've enjoyed Queen Of Sheba and Etete more than Meskerem. (I think I'd probably recommend Etete first, because IIRC, QoS is the one that charged ridic amounts for the sodas, but check their website if you want live music that could be fun and worth it)

I don't generally bring stuff back for the coworkers when travelling, because we all travel so much. But if I go someplace like New Orleans around Mardi Gras I'd bring king cake, or if I got to go somplace far away/exotic, I'd grab something you can't get here, or whatever.

I do occasionally get bloody mary mix on the plane, and I never do that anywhere else, but not that frequently.

And I wear whatever pair of shoes is the biggest and can't fit in my suitcase, usually...

I try to clean the room as best I can before leaving. (like, throw trash away, pile the towels together, etc.) This also helps me ensure I don't forget anything. I've never stripped the bed though.

Ooh! Me! Like, specifically that. I love the bloody mary tomato juice on planes. But have you looked at the ingredients? Those tiny cans are half of your salt intake for the day! Craxy.

Huh. I've never left less than $20 for hotel housekeeping, even if it was a one-night stay.

Answers:

1) I usually forget and feel guilty later.

2) I could only wear heels over 2.5 inches if I had one of those electric carts drive me everywhere. I wear slip-on walking/running shoes. (Note to people who wear high heels or flipflops on the plane: There is no guarantee that the plane will land at your intended destination. Do you really want to spend four days in Gander, Newfoundland, in stilettos?)

3) When I had officemates, I usually brought back candy because it's easy to share.
