Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

I just bid on a slide rule on eBay. A fairly basic wooden one. I was the first bid at $5. There are some REALLY neat older ones there, too.

Interesting how the looks of things like this change. I went to a museum of the history of science in Italy, and it struck me how a lot of the older telescopes and things like that were covered with decorative paper or had carved wood. Things totally unneccesary for the function, but they made them pretty anyway. And these slide rules definitely have a range from purely functional to ones that were definitely made to look nice, too.

It's kind of happening with calculators, too. Graphing calculators were the big new thing when I was in middle school and high school, and I think there were two companies (Texas Instruments and HP) making them, and they were available in blue or grey -- each model was a slightly different shade of blue or grey. Now, they come in all different colors. I saw a girl using a pink graphing calculator.

Now that I think about it, I think there's a slide rule in my parents' attic, in my mom's box of stuff from when she worked on the Apollo Project. I know there's a flow-chart stencil in there. Plus two really thick books of the flowcharts for all the computers on Apollo 11.

Shit's all sorts of different now.

Delete that post right now Hil before Joe sees it and breaks into your house. I'm not even kidding.

Just call me "Siouxsie Shunshine".

Donwanna.

Kristin, I should get you a copy of the one act I did for competition. 'Don't Wanna' figured heavily into part of the show.

ION, I'm all packed and ready to leave tomorrow. I am, however, leaving all paperwork here. It will be here when I get home and FCAT is next week so I can do some grading then. Plane ride will be dedicated to listening to iPod or watching a movie, reading a book and getting some rest. Hope the conference is as good as it looks to be from the info received and previous experiences!

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

Don't forget circular slide rules. These two are probably the most common still in everyday use: [link]

Wow, Hil, that is beyond cool!

I've almost adjusted to Pacific time zone...just in time to head back east, and then get whapped with daylight savings. Argh.

Thrive to spite them

Hi everyone.

I've been absent recently I just hit recent on all the threads I'm subscribed to because there's no way for me to get caught up.

I'm sort of taking a break from b.org. I didn't mean to, it sort of happened and I'm kinda figuring things out that I think when I come back will make me a better, I do'nt want to say a better buffista because that's not what I'm trying to say and not really a better person. But more secure about myself I guess.

I'm babbling. I honestly never thought that I would take a break from the Buffistas but I think it's a good thing.

I will probbaly see if there are responses to this. If anyone wants to email me please do. I'll probably be emailing some of you.

I'm going ot be redoing some things with my livejournal as well. Not that I've posted much there.

Anyway I totally feel like saying it's not you, it's me and that i'm breaking up with the board but I'm not.

.....I really need sleep.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

That is probably a serious risk.
