so, I bought a tree, but the trunk is too thin for the stand I have. Tree is currently leaning against a bookshelf. What can I do? besides buy a new stand?

Use bits of kindling to wedge around the base of the trunk. (I grew up in a house with a fireplace, so bits of random wood were always around. Not sure what the alternative might be.)

Though in a pinch, you could use a shim as a shiv. But I don't think it would be a very effective weapon.
