In America, on the other hand, asking someone what they do for a living is idle chatter, but in Europe or Britain is often never brought up among people who are just meeting.
Heh, I was thinking about that, too! And any question which might in some way hint at your income. Like, "What neighborhood do you live in?" Mugga told me a story about some non-Brits asking his parents about their home, much to their discomfort. Things like, "Oh, do you have a separate den?"
