'Out Of Gas'
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I just ordered the raspberry coat and the brown boots! Go team warm!
I once tried to explain to a rabid hockey fan that being a Buffistas was just like his hobby but with a different inspiration. I cited instant bonding with strangers, fascination with minutae, and odd clothing among my other examples. He just kept staring at me like I was insane.
I think you make a good point. There can be a sort of double standard. I'm neither a sports event nor con goer. However, if I dressed up in an NFL jersey and went to an event to buy sports memorabilia and get an autograph of a player, that would be cool. OTOH if I dressed up in a Star Trek uniform and went to an event to buy trek memorabilia and get an autograph of an actor, I would be a loser.
Speaking of geekishness, someone on my friendslist has this challenge going. Assemble a team of supervillains, one to fill each slot:
1) The Manipulator (ie, the one very good at playing complicated games & bending people to their will; probably the team leader. See: Lilah Morgan, Ba'al, Danny Ocean, Scorpius, etc.)
2) The Face Puncher (Faith, The Operative, Callisto, Niki Sanders)
3) The Gadget Builder (Kaylee, Niirti, Lex Luthor)
4) The Sex Appeal (Sylar, Mystique, Emma Frost, Eroica, etc.)
5) The One Who Eventually Suffers A Crisis Of Conscience And Turns To Good, Damn Them (Darth Vader, Teal'c, Xena, etc.)
I read a book recently that made a very similar point....
We're sportsfans without a sport!
THAT'S what the Buffistas are!!!!
He was sort of cute. And we were sort of being set up. And in the course of the "getting to know you" chattage he decided I was insane even though he was the one who would talk about his alumni hockey team FOREVER with anyone in hearing.

I feel I should know off the top of my head which chapter Allyson says this in (although I think it's not hockey). But I have the Swiss cheeseitis of the brain.

Yeah, I've told the story before. Bitch totally ripped me off...
(I kid, I kid)
It may be the degree of devotion as well. If I were able to recite important statistics for every current NFL player (or every player who'd played for my favorite team during the past 50 years), most people would think I'd gone a bit overboard.
Yes, there are baseball geeks(My fake newsguy boyfriend is totally one) There is nothing that happened on any diamond, anywhere, that he won't take an interest in. Which leads me to know, despite total lack of sportliness, that Honus Wagner is the most Expensive Baseball Card In The Woorld! Susan, do you watch "Countdown"! You should. Really. Sorry...couldn't resist. The fact that he can also do that for Lincoln--Douglass is an attractive bonus.
