Why does "Zoe" have an afro?

I pondered that myself. I'm not sure that "because that's the hairstyle she would have had if she were, in fact, in a folk-rock band in the 1960s (or whenever)" is as acceptable reason as the designer might imagine.

Danger is my middle name, only I spell it R. u. t. h. - Tina Belcher.

it may not be an afro. it could simply be a way of representing her wavy hair pulled back the way she usually wore it on the show.

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

It's an afro, because her wavy hair was pretty close to her head. Plus, everyone else's hair is basically the same as it was on the show, why is hers different?

I'm also irritated that they realized that the hairstyle made her gender so ambiguous as to put lipstick on the caricature (which doesn't make sense if they were going with the "folk rock band" vibe), but they were so invested in the afro that they did it anyway.

It's like they said "oh, it's a folk band, so a black person would have an afro" @@

All is well that ends in pizza.

I'm guessing we'll want to wait until next week for our next (and last, for this round, at least) watch&post, because of the holiday. Of course, if there is a chorus of people ready, willing, and able to watch tomorrow, I would happily charge full speed ahead. I should be able to make it.

"I make mistakes, but I am on the side of Good," the Golux said, "by accident and happenchance.” – The 13 Clocks, James Thurber

I'm watching the episodes airing on the Science channel, and Ariel is the new one this week, and it occurs to me... why the hell did Mal entrust the unconscious Simon and River to Jayne? He should have divided them up differently, and sent Jayne with Zoe, who would have ridden herd on Jayne and kept him in line as they cleaned out the infirmary, and Mal could have protected the Tams. It made no leadership sense at all to hand over two helpless people to a man who openly hated them.

Yeah, Morgana, that is one of those moments that require a fair bit of handwavium to get through, because the real answer to your question is, "Because otherwise the action would be over in 20 minutes, and the rest of the episode would consist of the crew spending their ill-gotten gains at some resort moon. And while everyone in bathing suits would be very scenic, probably would not result in the drama and character development of Mal deciding not to space Jayne because he showed a semblance of shame for his actions.

Alternatively, it could be presumed that Jayne's reading level would make him a poor choice for identifying the most profitable drugs in a timely fashion - Mal and Zoe were working fast there, while he would have still been trying to sound things out - making it necessary to take the chance on him because he couldn't get the other part of the job done, and there was no one else to fill the spot of watching out for the Tams.
