You notice despite all his talk about honorable deaths and killing yourself if you fail in your job, he's still standing at the end. He doesn't do the "honorable" thing and kill himself.

I never got the feeling he had the same job as this Operative. He may well have had some other job top-secret enough to have known about them, some similar top level secret agent stuff.
