In the commentary Joss mentions that the symbol is for "short interval" which would work depending on how much time the hourglass keeps.
Okay, now it's really sad that I didn't notice the hourglass before, considering I may have watched the commentary more than the straight episode. I think my dissertation broke my brain.

Regarding the white font: interesting. A lot of posters here kind of guessed that. Then again: "I don't care if your innocent". And some of the other stuff, really strong sub-text.

Wow...bit of a let down really... But it does make sense. Objects in Space hints at it with Book telling River (who is in River-land) that he doesn't care if she's guilty. It could explain also why in the pilot he tries to warn Dobson
