I wonder why they wrote out Book for this episode.

I have no idea. But they eliminated Book completely, and Inara is only in the very beginning and at the very end, so in this episode at least, they managed to cut out 2 entire characters.

I really, really enjoy watching competent Simon. He so often seems to be the butt of jokes and the fish out of water.
