What's the difference between a DVR and TIVO? I thought that they were the same thing, only TIVO is a brand name for a DVR.
Basically, but the way they work can be different. I preferred my DVR to the Tivo I have now. One example why is that I could do split screen with my DVR (i.e., look at the guide or programs I had saved) while watching a show. TiVo pauses your program goes to another screen. There's a lot more clicking through menus with the Tivo.

Yes, but your standard issue generic cable company DVR has very limited features and can only download TV. Tivo has access to other content (video podcasts, Amazon Unbox movies, etc), and has a much more powerful user interface.
Seriously? I didn't know that. Keen!
I just sold my soul to the devil, and if felt GOOD!
I can haz car!
I have internet at the house! Yay! I'm so far behind!
And I've got to get our cable sorted out (No BBCAmerica) but I'm just happy to have this one connection.
In short, you can do more with a TiVo, but (in my opinion) it is more annoying/time-consuming to use. Except for the fact that my housemate has a gazillion GB of storage that allows us to record everything and the kitchen sink, I would go back to my DVR in a heartbeat.
Yay car! Yay, Cashmere! Yay, TiVo!
Well, I emailed the bloke.
!!!
And so, to bed. Thanks for your encouragement, folks!
I almost was going to go with a DVR when I upgraded to HD, but I was able to keep my lifetime plan and see forward to features I really wanted (extensible storage, interoperability with my other computers and my old TiVo) and am quite happy now.
Welcome back to the real world, Cashmere.
Man, dilaudid makes me ITCH.
