Safety-wise, what are you supposed to do if an earthquake hits? For our area's normal natural disaster, the default is "run to the basement." I have a feeling that's not what you do in an earthquake.

You're supposed to get away from things that can fall over on you (wide open spaces are good for that) or under something that may help protect you--sturdy table, for instance.
We were taught doorframes in prep school, I swear, but everything I've seen since then says to avoid doors. Maybe it's just third world doors that are safe...
3rd World doorways are OK, it's just the rest of the house that you have to watch out for, like the ceiling and the floors and the walls and you know....
