Anne, I'm so sorry, especially for your Mom. I guess it doesn't matter how old you are yourself, the death of a parent still hits so hard!
Natter 54: Right here, dammit.

It's like a dance with hands, which would be hard to translate to the written word, yet would have its own rhythm, figurative allusions, 'rhymes' and 'puns' in similar gestures.
When I was a kid, I was in this show that had the most amazing sign language interpreters. They did all kinds of things that weren't the ASL words, but really interpreted the songs -- like when we were singing sea shanties or whatever, you could see them acting out climing the rigging and stuff. It was very cool.
My condolences, Anne. Peace and strength to you and yours.
he suddenly wondered if deaf people have the same appreciation of poetry as hearing people, in regards to meter and rhyme and such. Does anyone have any idea?
My guess is yes. When I was in grad school, the Nt'l Theatre of the Deaf was touring and they came and conducted a master acting class for the MFA acting students. The first 30 minutes of class was performed without any language (sign or spoken) and it was one of the coolest things I've ever done. A lot of the class was getting the ensemble to work together with rhythm and harmony.
Then, that night, they performed Hamlet. It was one of the best productions of that show I've ever seen and they def. got the rhythms of Shakespeare's language down. Probably even moreso than speaking actors because they expressed the language with their whole bodies.
Happy Birthday Alibelle!
Timelies all!
Happy Birthday Alibelle!
There's a woman I know in the filk community who does the most expressive signing I've seen. She puts her whole body into it. She actually won the Pegasus(major filk award) for best performer last year.
Happy birthday, Alibelle!!!
It's clear I suck at remembering friends' ages.
Happy birthday, Alibelle!
Happy 40th, Alibelle!
(just making sure my bases are covered)
