"You can't put a price on the joy of not giving a shit." -Zenkitty

I have no idea why this is bothering me so much.

Like others have said, sometimes it's very important to draw lines. I would consider it inappropriate to ask anyone to take time off work to care for a person who isn't a relative or a close friend.

Maybe I'm not a good person, but I wouldn't agree to care for an adult suffering from these kind of severe neurological problems just because she happened to be my neighbor.

Um, I'll watch my neighbor's dog while she goes to the ER, though!

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

OTOH, 20 people and only one pie?

Er, my experience is that three people can finish off a pie, if they have seconds. Perhaps I cut generously. For 20 people, at least 3 pies. Do you have a cook's assistant? That's a lot of apple-peeling.

All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story. Tell me a story.

Master Vocalist stretching the boundaries of operatic and concert singing and enriching the landscape of contemporary performance through her advocacy of established and emerging composers.

I'm curious about this grant. Everyone else seems to be creating (or researching) something. Unless she's somehow involved in the composition process, I don't get it.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I was psyched to see Dawn Upshaw get one. Spider Silk Biologist? Also cool.

Corey Harris? Feh. That's the kind of blues I don't like. Academic blues.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

I just found out that Clarence Thomas is going to be on the Rush Limbaugh show.

That's really not okay, right? Seriously?

Right?

Fuck them and the posse they rode in with!

The Annual MacArthur Grant Announcement = your chance to play Sour Grapes.

It's kind of fun.

Sad but true. Or I could revel in the innovation that goes on around me.... I bet Geoff Canada has one, too. Edit: Ah ha -- he doesn't. OK, I guess I can stop being organizationally jealous now.

Always Anti-fascist!

Well, it means the dummy has switched ventriloquists from Scalia to "comedian" Rush Limbaugh.(AS can finally drink a glass of water now...this is major.) Next year, he might follow a dog act. Oh, you mean *ethically*? Yeah, kind of sleazy, but nothing new for: Clarence Thomas, Worst Jurist In The Wooorld!(/KO likes carrots) ETA: I actually know a genius grant recipient...Greg Smith, for his work on the "On A Roll" radio program. He deserved it.
