Hey. New board.

Why are two altos trying out for Maria?

Because realism is not for Glee. Does the club even have any sopranos? Unfortunately, the soprano is not really so much popular these days: it's all about the belting mezzo.

It only lasts an episode or two, so everyone may get their turn.

Lea can sing soprano, can't she? She was in consideration for Maria on Broadway just before she was cast in Glee.

I was amazed that Harry could sing as well as he did tonight without obvious electronic enhancement.

Quinn? I can't remember hearing enough of Brittany singing anything with enough range to tell.

Isn't Tina a sporano?

Hey. New board.

Lea is a mezzo-soprano with a strong high belt. She can certainly sing in a high range, but she's not a lyric soprano. It surprises me that she was in consideration for Maria: the girl who got the role was a classic lyric soprano with an operatic tone, which is how Maria is traditionally cast. They may have been considering a more modern take on the role. I'm sure Lea can hit all the notes, but it wouldn't sound like the traditional Maria.

Tina sang a song from West Side Story sometime in the first season; it was her "can't quite pull it off" song. She could conceivably do it, but they've downplayed her. And Quinn. Probably because they're just not as good.

Because books.

Also, most people (i.e. me) wouldn't know the difference. They have to work with the actors they have, anyway.

Did Kurt get any part in West Side Story? He'd be a good Baby John or Action.

I also would have put Mercedes as Anita and Santana as Rosalia, but it seems like Anita isn't considered a big part in the Glee world.

Apparently not. Despite Beiste having to strongarm her football players into filling out some of the roles, they seem to have decided that it was Tony or nothing for Kurt. I can see him losing out Riff to Mike after that audition, but you'd think one of the other parts might do.

I don't think the new boyfriend is all that good for Mercedes, actually.

Hey. New board.

I think Santana will rock Anita in ways that Mercedes couldn't: Anita really is a dancing part, and that is not Mercedes' cup.
