Now, I can hold a note for a long time...actually I can hold a note forever. But eventually that's just noise. It's the change we're listening for. The note coming after, and the one after that. That's what makes it music.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I'm laughing a lot more at Parks and Rec. This week's episode felt a little more like the show, and it had its moments, but so far it's not living up to the last two seasons.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Perkins,

it has been uneven. Apparently this week was a nod to Fringe, but not wildly funny.

A nod to Fringe ? Oooh, okay. Huh.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

Speaking of Community, I've just started watching Season 2, and holy hell, Betty White! How funny was that?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

A nod to Fringe? I thought the Earth 1/Earth 2 stuff was comics geekery.

I've been liking it just fine.

But they called it Earth 1 and Earth 2, didn't they? Or at least Abed did.

Yeah, which is a standard thing. Hell, I thought it was a reference to Another Earth.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

So, I think the reason I haven't typically watched many sitcoms is that....I don't really like sitcoms. Weird! I'm watching Up All Night, and I can tell it's good and funny, but I just don't care. But I do think all parents should watch it and laugh.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Jesse,

I stopped watching sitcoms in the early 1990s. My main problem with most of them then was that the humor beats were too predictable (see "Two and a Half Men" for a today's example). It was so boring predicting all the laugh beats and the jokes. "Seinfeld", while generally a funny show, fell into this trap in the later seasons.

"Parks and Recreation", "Community" almost never fall into this trap for me. Even in episodes that don't really work, I don't find the humor all that predictable. A lot of what I find funny nowadays are things that take me by surprise ("Louie" at his high points).
