I guess I shouldn't be surprised that, since they apparently have no idea how show choir competitions actually work, they wouldn't have any idea how Academic Decathlon works, either.

That's what everyone thinks Academic Decathlon is!! Except for the Super Quiz, YOU JUST SIT IN A BUNCH OF ROOMS AND TAKE TESTS.
Which doesn't make for good television, of course.

They only used the phrase "Academic Decathlon" once or twice. If they'd just said "quiz bowl" instead, it would have been fine, since the TV quiz show they were on did look a whole lot like the local shows that high school quiz bowl teams compete on all the time.

Yeah, it fit exactly with my memories of quiz bowl in the late 80s, complete with the Jeopardy style categories.

The only movie that's ever done Decathlon right is Cheaters. Which is because it was an HBO movie about some people who cheated on the Academic Decathlon, based on a true story. With Jeff Daniels and Jena Malone! Unfortunately, not a great movie.
