I'm wondering just how magnificent a honeymoon Burt and Carol were planning on taking -- I just checked the tuition for the prep school in my town, and it's $45,500 for boarding students and $31,500 for day students. So even if his new school gives Kurt a break considering he won't be going for the full academic year, that's still some serious coinage. Also, what's the plan for next year? (I know, they needed to react to the immediate threat and didn't have time to make long-term plans, but unless Carol can pull in a lot more money than I suspect Burt does, Kurt is going to have to sell some organs on the black market to be able to afford to stay at that school.)

Scholarship? Academic and as a singer? Maybe?
Kurt's mom's life insurance, I'll wager.
Somehow, I think that Burt has a little more money than is obvious. Remember the car that he bought Kurt? That was a very nice SUV.

This. Plus Burt's protectiveness of Kurt. Plus the producers want to increase the tension between McKinley and Dalton, plus increase Blaine's role at the same time.
I doubt the school is supposed to be a $30,000 school - very few private schools in the country actually cost that much. Prep schools on the Upper East Side of Manhattan run that, as do boarding schools like the one you linked to in the Northeast, but in most of the middle of the country they are not that high.
The schools I'm applying to teach for in the Nashville area run between $10,000 and $20,000. A cursory glance at a couple of OH schools, to best compare to Lima, show a similar range. Kurt's new school appears likely to be on the high end of that, but many schools offer pretty good financial aid to students who impress them, so he has a good chance at a scholarship that will make a serious difference. I know at my current school more than 60% of students receive some financial aid - that's higher than most, as it's a religious school and draws funding from people specifically supporting Jewish education, but most schools offer something.
Also, he may be getting some consideration for joining the Warblers. If they really are "rock stars", then the choir director may have some pull/scholarship money to offer.
It still bugs me that we're expected to believe that Burt owns a 1 bedroom house.

But it didn't bug that Buffy could afford to buy a new cashmere pashmina every week, and had enough fancy leather to suit up the entire Folsom Street parade?

Maybe they moved after Kurt's mom died? And because they were so distraught, he thought that the basement would be good enough for Kurt?
ow!
Sorry, I hit myself in the head with all of the hand waving.
