Well spoken, Chenoweth. My Dad claims he can't buy Neil Patrick Harris as stright. My family is openly pro-tolerance and it drives me batty when Dad says that. We just don't talk about HIMYM anymore.
You know, I put stock in my gaydar, but I never even considered NPH as gay.
Neil Patrcik Harris was Doogie before my gaydar developed. And I admit sometimes I do have trouble buying certain actors as straight cough Tony Curtis cough but Barney seems so very straight to me. Maybe Dad has feelings he's covering up.
When I found out that he was gay, I wasn't stunned, but at the same time, he plays a straight guy well enough. My issue is, I can't believe that *anyone* acts like Barney, but that's a different thing.
Ha! Allow me to introduce you to my friend Bob sometime. Not quite as bad, but close, complete with kind streak he'd prefer no one know about.
I have a co worker who says the same thing about how he can't really get into the character of Barney because NPH is gay.
I asked him if had a hard time believing any other actor on the show, or any other show or movie since it's freaking ACTING.
He didn't seem to have a hard time believing Sigourney Weaver in a space movie or a bunch of people acting as CGI blue creatures.
Yeah, I have a hard time believing Alyson Hannigan is into Jason Segal, because I know she's happily married!
Wait -- no I don't.
I don't have any trouble buying NPH playing straight characters, although there are some actors for whom that issue crops up. Including Ty Burrell, who I'm fairly certain is straight and married in real life but couldn't sell me on the heterosexuality of any of his characters if his life depended on it.
I can't see Sean Hayes playing a straight guy, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I mean, I've never seen him play a straight character, so I really don't have a frame of reference for it.
