Woe to the fucking wicked.

I have no issue with first name use, but, yeah, it seems to weird students out a bit, especially, I think, as they're going to be teachers, and that would freak them out a lot.

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

I was a double major. In the theatre department, all of my profs were first name. In the english department it was all Doctor or Professor. It depends on the culture.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

At my college all the professors were called "Professor." And they did, in fact, profess.

Every professor at my college had a doctorate, though.

In most traditional academic fields you need a Ph.d. to become a professor, but there is a tradition in some applied fields (nursing, architecture, education, business) where experienced professionals without a doctorate serve in the role, particularly if it is not a tenure track appointment. That tradition is in decline (driven in part by rating systems like US News that use % of faculty with doctoral degree as a criterion), but a good architect who is a charismatic teacher still could be appointed with a title of professor.

The lecturer-professor thing differs across cultures. In Britain and Brit-influenced universities world-wide an American assistant or associate professor is a lecturer, and only full professors are professors. As an associate professor I spent a year in Europe on a Fullbright, and was startled to find that I was no longer a "real" professor. I felt like I had been demoted.

"I'm useless alone." // "We're all useless alone. It's a good thing you're not alone."

No comments on Glee? I don't care how implausible it is, I needed that scene of the football players dancing.

I am annoyed at Glee's complete suspension of logic. Disbelief, sure, but there has to be some sense involved. It is stupid to build up the situation between Kurt and his dad only to have the complete anticlimactic "I've always known and I love you for who you are" speech. If that was true, he wouldn't have taken the car away when he found the tiara collection. And I don't mean to be classist, but why did they go to the trouble of making Kurt's dad look like a blue collar galoot, but there's clearly money for Escalades and Marc Jacobs sweaters? And then they threw in the bit about Kurt's mom being dead, where did that come from?

Just ugh.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

Had to change my tagline after seeing last night's ep. I really thought that Stephen Toblobowsky would be a one-time guest star in the pilot--nice to see he's got a regular spot in the cast now!

Occasionally I’m callous and strange

It was all worth it for the entire football team dancing to the most inappropriate song possible. Um, is cheerleader girlfriend really preggers? I totally thought that was a ploy until mohawk dude came into the picture.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Yeah, but preggers from mohawk dude, right?

I'm thinking I need to regard the whole show as wildly implausible but I'm going to roll with it. Dancing football players! Also, making the dad think, huh, guess he was practicing for football. Hee.

But yeah, not too sure why they went some of the directions they did with characterizations. Also! The blushing insecure stammering Asian girl does not seem consistent with her audition. I'm just saying, that was not a performance that lacked confidence.

Still having problems with the diversity issues; I hope they go where I want them too, but it's requiring a lot of patience and faith for a show I don't know.
