Please, I grew up in New England when it was actually cold!
Oh, no, see I lived in New England during college in a drafty old house. Not as cold as when it was in the low 40s in SF the first winter I was there. (I think some of that was "HUH? How can I be cold in California? culture shock!)

Actually, the cold snaps here suck, precisely because insulation, central heating, and double-paned windows aren't as common as they are in New England/Alaska/Minnesota. The lack of structural insulations combined with the dampness makes it feel a hell of a lot colder than it is. The cold creeps into your bones with the mist.
I am with you on the not being tired of the fog, though. It's very comforting.

Low 40s! Did you miss the story about my siblings building me an igloo for a Christmas present? It lasted for months. My father used to make uphill both ways an ice rink in our backyard every year. That was cold!

Wow, am I loving how this project is turning out. And, I just contacted the woman who did the machine quilting for Emily's quilt, and she's going to do the quilting for this one. YAY! It's going to be so gorgeous.

This one thing I love (for now) about the fog, that icy feeling.

IJS, you talk to me in December...
hah!
Yes, it gets much colder in New England. I grew up there as well. In the eastbay I am in a house with double pane windows - but no wall insulation (and putting it in = mold) getting cold means staying cold. yes, colder in new england, but I am much more paranoid about being cold here.
Having lived in Montreal and London, I can wholeheartedly say that it's colder being in London than in Montreal. We never had burst pipes or a layer of ice in our toilets in Montreal.

I haven't suffered that much from the cold in December in SF in my admittedly drafty apartment. But we all just huddle around the heater in the living room and it's tolerable.
And it's often 62 in December.
