(I am quite sober, and at home of an evening, reading new used books, including one regency-era mystery quite inexplicably purchased from the science fiction section...I have yet to discover what, other than the publisher (Tor) would cause that. Perhaps a surprise ending of aliens did it, rather than the butler? Or the butler IS an alien?)

Answer to my bizarre Regency scifi mystery: turns out it's just a tad bit of alternate history that puts it in the "scifi" section--rather than going from crazy monarch to Prince Regent, it envisions a past with a Queen Regent between them for a few years. Um, right. That changes EEEEEVERYTHING. When talking about a girl who is a detective. Who lives behind a brothel. Oy.
