huh ... I always used tortoiseshell to mean the ones that are varying shades of brown/tan/gold - tweedy, as Susan put it - and calico to mean lots of white with black and orange patches (they're almost always female).
In completely unrelated news, my office is miserably hot and humid, even with a fan going. bleah.
