Basically, the admins have a half clerical/half customer service job. They have to learn how to use several databases, they have to keep things organized and make sure that information gets disseminated to the correct people, and they also have to deal directly with clients.
god that sounds hellish. Also, not dissimilar to my office where the one admin is office manager/CEO asst/part of another department.
Right now the other department is project management, so the person has to do
1) phones, mailings, office supply ordering, handling visitors (not really all that much in my office - except when we are hiring and then the visitor thing is a lot)
2) CEO expenses, travel and any needs (can be nothing one day and then a million urgent things the next)
3) Manange a project including weekly meetings with client, making and updating schedules, giving and tracking jobs into the creative studio, learning a content application, testing a project and getting issues fixed.
It's too much. I've been here just over 2 years and every person who has had that job has left the company, some had even moved out of the position full-time, but they still leave. I think they all start looking while they have that position and it just takes some of them longer to find something.

Well, I promise, I'm always super nice to the admins, because I figured out a long time ago that they make our little world go round. I think its a little ridiculous how LITTLE time they give the newbies to acclimate, learning to juggle takes time, you know. But the reason they are so quick to fire is that we had a little incident awhile back, with an admin who was crazy (not in a good way) and they had an extremely difficult time getting rid of her because of all the rules and regulations around such firings. So they now hire people with a pre-determined probationary period, and the understanding that they can fire them for any reason during that probationary period.
