It is interesting. And something that (Sera Gamble at least) has been thiking about for some time. We rewatched "Faith" and "Houses of the Holy" as part of our little Supernatural weekend. And it's interesting how willing Sam is to believe and how resistant Dean is.

I think it's because Dean lost his faith when Mary died, but was still able to instill a concept of faith in Sam.

I think it's because Dean lost his faith when Mary died, but was still able to instill a concept of faith in Sam.
Since Dean really has no faith at all, and is pretty much outright contemptuous of people of faith, why would you think he would bother to "instill a concept of faith in Sam"?
I think he even did it despite himself. Sam has faith because he trusts in his family. I don't know that Dean instilled a "religious" faith, but having the capability of faith in anything is a big step toward having faith that aligns with a particular religion.
What Ailleann said. Dean sheltered Sam from facing the realities of their world as much as possible. We saw that with the Christmas episode. Even if Dean "knew" that good things don't happen, he wasn't going to let Sammy know that. I think that is probably one of the contributing factors to why Sam even would think college was possible or consider anything like angels or God. Dean let Sam have hope.
I've always assumed that Dean remembered normal, and tried to give Sam what he could of what he remembered. Because Sam had authentic "normal", if only as much as Dean had been able to give him, Sam was better able to adapt to normal when he took the chance. Dean's sense of normal was ruined and broken, and given the chance at it, he wouldn't be able to trust it.
Just my armchair psychology.
I need to do the iTunes thing. I don't think I'm going to be able to fit the whole season on the TeFaux, and the local CWHD is still hinky. At least one scene per episode, usually two or three, pixellate or freeze.
Also, new tagline.
I don't think Sam was ever saddled with DUTY the way Dean was.
I wonder when John learned that Sam and the other kids like him were "special." I don't think he knew the specifics of what that meant until the show timeline (or perhaps that was the catalyst for the show).
I think Sam's "special" status must have affected the way John treated the boys.
Two new clips from tomorrow night's show. I thought that they were not particularly spoilery, i.e., they didn't give you more information than the promo did.
Okay - 3rd clip from the new episode.
Not spoilery in the sense that we know this is going to happen but it feels spoilery to see it. (If you get my drift. . . also !!!!)
I don't think it's too spoilery to say HOLY FREAKING CRAP!
