I tried to skim the Wikipedia entry on Lillith (hey, if Show can research there, I can too), and though it reads a bit like stereo instructions, I didn't really see anything that referenced a childlike demeanor. (Though she is mentioned in conjunction with a character called Samael, which caught my eye.)

I can't say that I'm seeing anything in common between Supernatural's Lilith and the Adam's first wife/demon who steals/kills baby boys (and all the other stuff that she is associated with!).
If she is the first wife, and demons are born of humans who had their humanity burnt away in hell, that would make Lilith the first and oldest demon, which doesn't seem to coincide with her right to the "throne" being on shaky ground.
Then I had another thought that maybe Adam, Lilith and Eve weren't made fully grown like I'd always pictured in my head, but made as children, and when Lilith refused Adam, they were only 12 or 14 at the time. But so far I'm not getting that this is where the show is going with her. Right now the name seems almost coincidental.
ETA My minds going in weird directions right now that probably have nothing to do with the show, but my speculating that Lilith was the first demon made me think that maybe she outlived Adam and Eve's two son's. You know, Cain and Abel. The brothers. Maybe the first demon born was Cain, whenever he eventually dies (of old age or disease since the mark God put on him protected him from being murdered). There's some elusive connection there my brain made between the first fratricide, and Sam and Dean being the opposite of Cain and Abel... I need more coffee...

I can't really draw conclusions about her maturity level from her possession of Ruby's host, as Katie Cassidy has always sounded like a spoiled, precocious teenager to me.

That's what I assumed, because I couldn't figure out how a child-like Lilith would work with the traditional story of Lilith.

Delurking to ask, isn't there something in Jewish mythology or tradition that Lilith became a demon after leaving the Garden of Eden? If she left before the Fall, would she be child-like, i.e., without "knowledge," given that Adam & Eve were under strict orders not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge. I'm not all that familiar with Judeo-Christian beliefs, I'm not very clear on all that.

Oh I know, I know. Watching Bones or any of the CSI shows with my friend who majored in forensic anthropology is similar. "IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT AAAAAUUGH!" becomes the refrain of the evening.
