There's a lot I handwave in this episode, since it wasn't a confirmed series yet. I'm giving like that.
But I do think that John probably drank some, and that Sam is extra pissy about other things and using that as a throwaway anyone would understand at the same time, both.
One of the things that's signature to this show is the quick-lapse film jumps for the ghosties. It's...how you can tell Supernatural ghosts from the ghosts on other shows.

It's that "The Ring" type movement. Is that where it started becoming so popular?

I think so, Austin. But SPN hs use it more and/or to better advantage than any other tv shows I've seen.
