The way this is shot, it's evident that Sam was intended to be the (singular) central character. Dean was the funny, badass sidekick. I'm so glad the producers realized what a treasure they had in the actors' chemistry, and refocused on the brothers' relationship, and further, allowed that relationship to evolve, to grow, to change.
