Because books.

Sammy was eight, I think we figured out. Which works. If he was nine when John gave him the gun, it was because John knew Sam knew what they were up against.

Dean is SO PRETTY in this episode. It's Perfect Dean.

Thrive to spite them

Sam talking about John giving him a 45 and how they grew up.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Holy Long-Winded Exposition, Sammy!

Damn, this pilot just has me fall in love all over. Every time I watch, actually. From Sam waking up through the fight to Dean saying, "Yeah, well I don't want to" especially.

Sammy was only 7 or 8 in Very Supernatural Christmas. so it meshes...

I can't get over how young they look.

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

I've seen him pack that knife and hold it in PR photos, but I've never seen Sam *use* that knife.

Oh, the "Jim, Jack and Jose" crack. I still think he's just being pissy at John, rather than describing their childhood.

Oh! It's whatsher name, from Life!

Sam's not resentful at all, in the least there is he.

Because books.

There's a lot I handwave in this episode, since it wasn't a confirmed series yet. I'm giving like that.

But I do think that John probably drank some, and that Sam is extra pissy about other things and using that as a throwaway anyone would understand at the same time, both.

One of the things that's signature to this show is the quick-lapse film jumps for the ghosties. It's...how you can tell Supernatural ghosts from the ghosts on other shows.
