is there ever a point at which we saw but didn't know Sam was possessed? Or was that something that happened offscreen inbetween eps?

No, the actual possession happens off camera. The audience doesn't really know that Sam's possessed until (I think) when he attacks Dean.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

I don't think he's at DESPAIR yet. That's pretty much equal to without hope, in my mind.
I saw despair in Playthings. It's after Ava is missing (and not yet known to be evil), when Sam goes off, gets drunk and makes Dean promise to kill him. That, to me, is despair. He moves past it. But that's where I see it. I think he did lose hope. He just keeps finding a little bit more.

thanks, Ailleann, when I saw it I was certain that I had missed an ep (due to my confusion of watching Seasons 1 & 2 at the same time --don't hurt me, Bev! I'm slowly accumulating the eps for later rewatch and Oh Show!ing --On a bucket note, I had been watching Rome, and declared, "Oh, Pullo!" and my dog freaked out at the tone in my voice, started woofing up a storm. Freaky.)

"What would it take to get your daughter to stop tweeting about this?"

Cass, I agree. That is what I see with both boys. Both of them get just enough (and I do mean barely just enough) to keep going.

I had been watching Rome, and declared, "Oh, Pullo!" and my dog freaked out at the tone in my voice, started woofing up a storm. Freaky!

That is freaky. Coincidentally, I've never seen Rome but have been meaning to catch up on its episodes.

Sam suddenly being drunk just weirded me out and I thought he was possessed then, which I think also added to my confusion of just when he got possessed. Cuz, random, and within that ep, as far as I can remember, no lead-up to it at all. And perhaps some discussion here that I didn't comprehend at the time.

Linky to the HOTH fic please.

If you mean mine? It's here.

(I still feel weird linking to fic in here, but no one seems to mind, so...)

This is very true. I'm not paying attention to how closely he's tamped it down, I think.
