Maybe we should discuss who's got keys to the engine room to keep this ship afloat.
Maybe we should discuss who's got keys to the engine room to keep this ship afloat.
I was thinking about this just today -- mostly from the code side, as it seems like the administrative side of things (domain/hosting renewals and such) is pretty well handled. But the code should live somewhere that isn't just in the dreamhost account and ita's personal machines, and several people should have access to that. Even if we don't plan any feature changes, in case of security needs, upgrades, that kind of thing.
I was wondering about this too.
So-
a) are there people who have the knowledge to do so?
b) Are those people able to do that
c) Can we get the code from the dreamhost account to do so, or do we need to somehow get that from ita's personal machines.
(And for all I know, this could already be covered -- I haven't really been involved in technical adminnage. And If so, ignore me! But if not, I'm happy to help out. I have no photos to post, but I at least know how to set up code repos and such.)
edit because xpost:
a) are there people who have the knowledge to do so?
Yep. I php-wrangle all day, and I'm volunteering, whether it's to help with setting up something new or helping out with current duties if things are already secured. We already have a few folks (JonB and Scola, afaik) who have keys to the server and know way more than I do about what's currently set up; I want to help as needed but not step on toes.
b) Are those people able to do that
I can at least help out when things are broken.
c) Can we get the code from the dreamhost account to do so, or do we need to somehow get that from ita's personal machines.
It all exists on dreamhost; I don't know anything about where else it is, hence my wondering aloud.
(I can be ignored too. I feel like organizing things in bureaucracy is a thing I can contribute, if needed.)
The code hasn't changed significantly in a long time. The most recent changes were tweaks to get the site working when we switched providers in 2013. I guess we could throw it up on github or something. How private can you make github repositories?
So a little roll call for the code monkeys (which I say with great deference): Scola, DXM, Jon B., shrift, Typo, Matt H., Gud, Mr. Burrell et al.
Do you have access to the code? Can you fix it if it goes awry?
Thanks, Tom. I was figuring you would know.
