Damn you, Bridget! Damn you to Hades! You broke my heart in a million pieces! You made me love you, and then you-- I SHAVED MY BEARD FOR YOU, DEVIL WOMAN!

Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

Very possible. If so, I think somehow that's even more disappointing.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I was watching Caché last night. I think it's one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. I stopped halfway. Is it worth continuing? I'm vaguely intrigued by the concept, but, God, is it slow.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

I found it riveting, myself. But Haneke's a bitter pill of a filmmaker. I think he's as misanthropic as Von Trier, and sometimes I find his movies as revolting as I find some of Von Trier's. I liked Cache, though. It reminded me a bit of Cantet's Time Out, another movie that pretends to be a suspense film but isn't. Cantet's a much warmer filmmaker, though.

Well, I don't see the payoff myself, but Y(WTF)MV.

Speaking of boring, Caché is actually the cover of the film book I'm editing right now. The authors insisted on it because they love the film. I don't know how this cover would induce anyone to pick up this book.

Yeeeeah, unfortunately, historically, this is not a good sign for me.

But Haneke's a bitter pill of a filmmaker. I think he's as misanthropic as Von Trier

Yeah, I mean...I don't really give a fuck about these people, and he doesn't seem to want to try to make me. Half the time, he doesn't even show them onscreen.

It reminded me a bit of Cantet's Time Out, another movie that pretends to be a suspense film but isn't.

I thought it was supposed to be "Hitchcockian." But no. Hitchcock was not this fucking boring. And his characters were likable and compelling.

Well, I don't see the payoff myself, but Y(WTF)MV.

I guess I've already put in an hour of my life, I might as well give it the other? I don't like not finishing movies. I was thinking of you because my other thought was, "Holy shit, I don't know how anyone understands French. Everything slurs together! How do you pick out WORDS?"

Ha.

Hey, wait, this is the Funny Games guy? Huh.

Hah! The French are big mumblers.

A college friend was visiting me in Paris and trying to following what I said when I bought tickets and such. He was like "I can't hear anything you say!?!" And I was like, dude, that's the goal, conversations should be private.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

I also liked Cache, but if you want a more viewer-friendly French Thriller Experience, run, don't walk to the theater to see Tell No One. It's scary, romantic, smart and fun. One of my favorite films this year. Go!
