BTW--our friend Andy is propmaster on the Cameron Avatar, and is going to New Zealand for three months to work with WETA. Woo hoo! His wife and two kids will join him for two weeks in November. We are invited anytime we want to go, but it is not in the cards. Still, our friend! working at WETA!

Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Awesome. Now I know what to get the little guy for Christmas. Thanks, shrift.
Admittedly, being only two and a half, the nephew might have just been all about the dancing baby penguin, but clearly I need to get started early, and Avatar will likely be a good gift anyway.
A little too close to home, though Emperors are well known for their lack of anybody home upstairs.
I think billytea might be able to confirm penguins aren't all that bright animals. Not that they need to be.
I was extremely disturbed by the bit where Mumbles zones out in the zoo and hated the Latino boys' bit with the smaller penguins.
They *could* have made a decent kids' movie out of it which could have been enjoyed by parents/adults if they had tried. But they got all self-righteous on us and decided that singing, dancing penguins were going to stop commercial fishing, lalalalala, the end.
I think Surf's Up is going to be a better bet.
Which I would have done anyway after seeing WITH FRIENDS LIKE HARRY... The man gives good enthusiastic creepiness.
Don't forget Jet Lag where he plays the abusive boyfriend of Juliette Binoche.
And I too was extremely distubed by the violence of Pan's Labyrinth, mostly because I went into it without realizing that a good part of the movie is not fantasy, but is in fact very much in the real world.

This is why I told S she's not allowed to see it, as much I think she'd like the movie otherwise. She knows why I don't think she should see it, and she agrees.
he little girl (8?) sitting next to me tearfully asked her mother if the movie was over.
Oh man.
I have to admit that I've never made it through any of Happy Feet. I tried on the airplane, but the start was too boring. Someone gave Mallory the DVD because he laughed like a drain at the trailer, and he's watched it a couple times. I tried to watch it with him, but quickly got bored.
Basically, the musical pastiche was so unworkable, and the visuals so monotonous, that I wasn't even pulled in enough to be offended.

I pimp Avatar to everyone who will stand still long enough to listen, and especially people who have or are buying for kids. I can't wait for the next season to start.

I was so terribly bored that being offended gave me something to do.
Avatar is wonderful. I don't know if 2-3 y.o. would get it, though.
Start with Pee Wee's Playhouse and work your way up.
David Strathairn Funny, cause in "Good Night and Good Luck", I went from "Hey, it's That Guy!" to "Is it me, or is he sexy now?" Which was new to me, as I didn't socialize much in college. But I'm glad I'm not alone in that. Even if I still can't remember his name and might shout out "Oh, look, it's Murrow." I hope he'd think it's a compliment. Or better than That Guy, at least.
