Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

The new Abe was no David Hyde Pierce.

The new Abe was Doug Jones, the man in the costume. But I agree.

And David Hyde Pierce went on record that he modeled his vocal performance in Hellboy on Doug Jones. It was the studio's attempt at a BO name, and Pierce was somewhat embarrassed about it.

Oh, Frank. And I thought we had something....

Sorry, I gotta go with South Park's take on FG - random jokes that occasionally are funny, but mostly I can't give a shit about any of it, and usually want to throw things at the television when I try to watch it. Peter is like the worst aspects of latter day Homer Simpson cubed, and it's the domination of latter day Homer that makes me avoid The Simpsons so much these days. Feh and ptui, I says.

Assablanca was a good jokey reference; that's about all I can come up with off the top of my head.

Granted, the fact that Fox kept bringin' back FG over and over again in decent time slots while they exiled Futurama to early Sunday night death slots (after it got decent ratings following The Simpsons) might have something to do with my distaste for the show.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

I also have nothing but distaste for Family Guy. In fact, I thought about taking this observation to the comedy thread, but it seemed more off-topic there than here.

I know my own heart and understand my fellow man. But I am made unlike anyone I have ever met. I dare to say I am like no one in the whole world. - Anne Lister

I love looking at Selma and her style just rocks, but I also must agree on the acting not being spectacular.

Amazon High

Didn't this end up being a Xena ep? It was weird.

I've tried watching the show various times (especially if it was on before something I really wanted to see) because I know a number of people who adore it, but I just end up with a sneer of total annoyance going on as I spot where they took joke A from and put it with joke B, etc., etc.

Peter = Homer

Stewie = The Brain

And on and on and on.

I do, too! I know people who were thrilled when it was revived. I'm guessing that Sean is one of these guys. It amazes me how I can otherwise feel an affinity of tastes with people who love that show, because to me, it seems like an endless parade of transparent stealing from better shows and paper-thin pop-culture references masquerading as jokes. I think I'm just blind to whatever people see in it.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

Hmm... I was thrilled when it was revived because the first run was IMO brilliant. Since it was brought back, I've hated every ep I've seen.

Huh. And I've enjoyed the new episodes a bit more than the old ones.

Yep. I'm one of those. Drew doesn't read or post in this thread, so I'll just out him now and point out that he's one, too.

Sorry, I gotta go with South Park's take on FG

The funny part about that? So do the writers for Family Guy.

After that South Park episode aired, the FG writers started calling the random stuff "Manatee Jokes" around the offices.

You've summed up my exact feelings about FG with this (partial) sentence. And I love the same kind of random pop-culture stuff in Robot Chicken. Maybe it's that they don't also try to shoehorn "characters" in there (apart from their relation to the pop-culture referents)? Sealab 2021 did to a certain extent, but the characters were so off-the-rails it didn't matter.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I'm with you, Sean! I find Family Guy pretty hilarious. It can be hit-or-miss, for sure, but I'm still a fan.

Sits in the FG corner with Sean and P-C.
