I have a special love for Anastasia as an animated musical. In particular, it came out at a time that I had grown completely sick of Disney animated films because of their insistence on being "musicals," when really what they were was "cartoons with songs." And I really wanted them to just stop with all the songs already, anyway.

Anastasia actually put forth considerable effort to be a musical, and actually follow some of the conventions and styles of musicals.

Which makes it clear that I've just always been a theater geek.

Apropos to this conversation, I watched "The Last Unicorn" yesterday. It was fun, because every time it was getting unbearably boring or silly, something AWESOME would happen. Like a butterfly making Hamlet references, or a wizard saying "Schmendrick is with you." multiple times.

I would definitely rate that very high on my list, though not above Lilo or Spirited Away.

Maybe I need to watch Finding Nemo again. I think I've only seen it the once in the theater.

Yeah, but the Skratt comic interludes were almost as good as Roger Rabbit shorts for Rube Goldbergesque, whackaloon comic timing.

On the subject of Miyazaki, I am a huge lover of Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso which fall outside the scope of this question. We watch Porco Rosso fairly often around Chez Zmayhem. Recommended for anybody that loves Miyazaki's flying scenes, and fans of Casablanca.

I don't like the Incredibles. I find the message icky, and disapprove of it as a film to show my child.

Says the woman who is allowing mass consumption of Beatrix Potter, which is no doubt at least as icky, but contains too much nostalgia for my brain to be rational regarding. (Plus, the BBC animated ones are lovely. They really are.)

Yes, this. Which is a shame because there's a lot I like about the film. But the things I don't like are hard to get over.

Yeah. Stitch is such a surly, snarly malcontent. They really didn't try to fuzzy him up. And the sister is trying so so hard. And Lilo with the punishing her friends, and her bug infested Scrump and her flabby tourist love.
