I think he took over the production of Curse of the Cat People from somebody else who wasn't working out.
He had been an editor for a long time. (He worked on Citizen Kane.)

Oh, I haven't seen it. I only know it exists because one of the predictions on Buzz Out Loud for 2008 was "a major movie studio will release a film whose title is a netspeak acronym (along the lines of "You've Got Mail")" and a listener sent in the link pointing out that it had already happened (though not from a major studio).
