Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Now tagless for your comfort.

It's Myanmar, Kevin. As much as I like to see legitimate world political issues addressed in movies, I also can't quite stomach the idea of one of the worst American movie icons that I can think of being brought back in an expensive shoot-em-up. Rambo is a relic of the gun toting, lone wolf, violent, American and not one that I think brings a warm, fuzzy feeling into geopolitics.

I'm sure conservatives will love it.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

Yeah, that's pretty much where my mind has gone Cashmere. It's possible they may use the movie to highlight, like, the extremely harsh situation in the country, or the lack of world response to the region... But I think it'll probably be about shit being blown up and nothing else.

Except First Blood was NOT like the others. I liked that one, and was disappointed with what little I saw of the others.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

That was back in the original Rocky era when Stallone was a good actor instead of a walking cartoon.

Does the end of I am legend have anything in common with book? White fonting my question, and putting some scroll lines.

Does Will Smith die in the end, with the world being left to vampires (er I gather in this version Zombies)?

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

FWIW, First Blood the original book is excellently written and all in the voice of Rambo's inner thoughts. It's like the character has gone through a Xerox machine far too many times.

Typo, his character dies at the end, however they've added in other survivors and a bunch of other stuff. They basically changed the meaning of the legend into a Hollywood ending (he Saves Da World!), which is a shame. Although I suspect a mainstream audience would have hated the book ending.

Oh, agreed! I should have stated that I did like First Blood. I think it's a good film. It's the caracature that the Rambo character became that bothers me most.

Kevin, thanks = reply whitefonted below

Although the Omega Man, for all its cheesiness did end with the world going to the plague victim/mutants. I believe there was a Vincent Price version I never saw that also ended with the vampires taking over. Omega Man was commercially successful, as I remember. (And honestly, I enjoyed the Omega Man. Of course I was a teenager at the time. Don't know if I'd like it as well today.)

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Typo, one key difference from the book is that until he totally loses it - basically when he has to put his dog down by hand because he'e become infected (and cheesy as that sounds, it was a GREAT dog, and a symbolic one as well) - the Will Smith character is using his blood to try to come up with a cure. He only starts going on a kill rampage after he goes over the edge (which pretty much coincides with the timeline of the movie). Until then, the deaths of the mutants have been from serums that didn't work.

I love the story of the original, but I like where they went with the revision they decided to do. I feel a TRUE Hollywoodized ending would have had Neville getting away too.
