Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

It's the River-Kaylee intersection that's throwing me, I think, because I don't think of them as particularly similar.

Ah. Got it.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

The thing that cracks me up about Alien Resurrection is the fact Jayne is in it. You know, he looks a bit different, though. One of Joss's many drafts is on the UK DVD, and it includes even more Jayne jokes.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Call doesn't map quite as well as some of the other characters. Johner was SO Jayne that honestly I could see Adam Baldwin in that role or Ron Perleman in FIREFLY.

I also think Michael Wincott and his (black, female) second in command COULD have been a Mal/Zoe, but either Joss didn't flesh them out for the movie or Jeunet chucked out large parts of the script (probably a bit of both). They were schmuck bait alien chow in any case, but I get the feeling seeds were being planted at that point.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I really like Alien Resurrection. Ok, I really like the first half. Once it gets all action-y it loses me. Although the action part did have one of the coolest revenge killings evah!

I ALWAYS loved that bit, especially since it's the Dane from Miller's Crossing that he takes his revenge on. Honestly (apart from the science being SERIOUSLY crap) it was when it started being an ALIEN movie (especially the very end - how many ways can you suck an alien out into space? Let's find out...) that it stopped working for me.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

The ALIEN series lost me at the beginning of Alien3, when they killed off Hicks and Newt. Sorry, but you kill off two of my favorite characters ever, I'm not going to be a fan of your movies.

Not looking forward to Serenity 2, Kathy A?

(Sorry)

I have Joss on video record saying he never wrote the Alien being sucked out into spacey thingy.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Yeah, at the beginning of Alien3, they rendered everything that happened in Aliens moot, and they did it all offscreen. Way to show respect to the fans, guys.

It is pretty amazing, though, that good or bad, the ALIENS movies definitely reflect the directors who made them (and I'd say AR mixed some definite Joss in - it's just I think Joss and Jeunet were oil and water).
