Well, I'm a big idiot. I'm listening to "I'm Breathless" - the album for the music and blah blah movie Dick Tracy. My favorite song, "What Can You Lose" comes on and I'm listening and I'm like, "That sounds an awful lot like Mandy Pitankin. But I'd remember him in the movie. Wouldn't I?"
Turns out, no. No I wouldn't.
Now I love it even more.
Stephen Sondheim wrote the music for that movie.
I thought Elfman did? Did Sondheim do the lyrics?
I need to own this movie.
Sorry, you're right. Specifically, he wrote the songs. Five of them, though I have no idea how many made it into the movie.
Dick Tracy used to be one of those movies i watched over and over. it's just so cheesy good.
Sorry, you're right.
marks day on calendar as it happens so seldom
From my search : Sooner or Later, More, What Can You Lose, Now I'm Following You, Back in Business, Live Alone and Like It.
"Now I'm Following You" isn't listed on the sondheim.com site, nor have I ever heard it. It's also not on Sondheim at the Movies, which includes a couple songs he wrote for "The Birdcage".

Damn.
crosses day off
It was written by other guys. A couple of Paleys and some other guys.
There's a fun version of "Sooner or Later" on the Carnegie Hall Tribute to Sondheim CD from the early '90s.
