We had dinner with our friend Keith last night. He has directed quite a few Dexters and I asked for any backstage info. He said it is a remarkably nice and sane group of performers and crew. Michael Hall is a very shy, serious guy but extremely nice--especially since he works 10-hour days on a regular basis. Keith Carradine was incredibly laid-back and he said he was "really kind of like the character he played, very centered." John Lithgow was charming and funny. Whatsherface who plays Debra is NOT anorexic, just skinny. She's bouncy and goofy and not your typical actress.
They shoot exteriors mostly here in Long Beach--they only spend a week in Miami each season. They plan out the wardrobe for the year, then take the principals down to Miami and shoot scenes of them in every clothing combo possible walking in and out of buildings. This footage is given to the directors to cut in with what they shoot to make it look like Miami.
Was he sad about Rubicon?
Very--he liked that show a lot. We all mourned its passing. He's going to be working on AMCs next big series though, which sounds interesting.
Is that The Killing? Or is it something even newer?
The showrunner, whose name I forget, once said that the way he pitched the show was something about a good guy going bad, and watching the conscious choices that got him there.
I don't think we really got to see enough of that in the pilot. He kind of went from good guy to whooooa what the fuck are you doing pretty quickly. I mean, there's a darker path for him to follow, sure, but it was hard to follow the choices that got him to the end of the pilot.
Thanks for the inside info, Scrappy! That's cool to hear about the actors.
Leverage Con-Con has been announced for June 2011.
That would be a really nice birthday present for me.
Dude, come down. I might even attend Con stuff with you. Instead of just going to the Kane show like .... Well every other week.
It's tempting to just hop on the train. We'll see how work goes, and vacation time.
