it's possible i'm watching the show from a different angle than the general public, as well. i'm not really into cookie-cutter pop stars and i know that's technically what the winner is supposed to be. i almost always enjoy the ones who buck that trend and go for it.
Honestly? David Cook is the only American Idol contestant I've heard in the entire run of the show whom I didn't immediately hate on hearing him.

Oh, me too. I have no interest in hearing anything Clay Aiken or Fantasia sings, ever.
Also, I don't think Simon and crew do the marketing. Once the winner is crowned, or whatever, it's up to the label, I would imagine.
I find it such a breath of fresh air to hear someone who isn't mimicing (mimicking?) something everyone knows by heart.
This is what I like about David Cook. He clearly knows what kind of artist he'd like to be, and he's offering that. He doesn't sound exactly the same to me every week, but he's definitely got a style.
For me, too, a perfect voice is so not the point. But as someone who listens to mostly rock, I'm used to it. I like a voice with a little character, some rough edges, some personality. David Archuletta, for all he can sing, bores me to tears.

Oh, I don't know about that. Idol's got a pretty big stake in the success/image of the winners, such as they are. I imagine they keep a hand in for a while at least. (And "they" pretty much equals Simon.)

This is me.
Plus, I just went and watched some of the behind the scenes packages at Fox and I have to say I'm worried for that kid. I heard something vague about his da being a nightmare...that coupled with a really shy, weak-seeming constitution, I can't imagine this thing ending well for him, whatever the outcome.
I wonder if the organization pays any attention to the emotional well-being of the contestants. Do they get 'how to be a success' help at all?
when you say Simon are you referring to Cowell or Fuller? because Cowell isn't really involved after the show is over. Simon Fuller is the 19 Entertaiment founder and his label is the one that signs all of the winners. he and Nygel Lythgoe are the brains behind Idol the tv show.
The way that tiggy feels about David C. is the same way that I felt about Danny on So You Think You Can Dance when he was getting the figjam edit. I could not for the life of me fathom all the folks who talked about how arrogant he was or how he already thought he'd won the competition and would get all mama bear protective, so I totally get not getting why everyone is hating on my favorite.
I love Idol. Have loved it since the very first season. And I'm not buying what David C. is selling, which is the same thing that Daughtry and all the "cred" contestants sell on this show. They sell this image that by liking them you are liking something "real" and "authentic" and somehow better than the show and better than the other kids who are manufactured pop creations on the show. And you know, fuck that noise. You are on Idol. You stood in the rain all night with the frikkin' bush baby, and the nutcase crack heads. You sang Edwin McCain's crap ass Dawson's Creek song in the audition rounds. You have made your reputation by being a copy of a copy of musicians with original thoughts and takes on music. If you had any real cred or artistic scruples, you'd never have stepped foot on the Kodak theater stage. So, no. You don't get to smirk at me or mouth off to Simon. David C. always comes of to me like he believes that he is better than the show and he is deigning to grace us with his presence so that he can show us how it's really done. Every time he takes the teensy bit of criticism he's gotten, he has some spiel about how he's just being who he is and doing what he does. Keeping it real, you know. And again I say, fuck that noise. You're on the show to be judged. To listen, learn, and hop into your box. That's how this show works. Everybody knows that by now. It's not like you don't know that your signing your soul away to 19E the first time you get the green wristband in Podunk Motor Raceway Stadium. It's season 7, for pity's sake. Get with the doggone program. If you have no interest in being down for the cause, then get the hell off my show. That's what drives me crazy about D. Cook. It's what drives me crazy to this day about frikkin' Daughtry every time he whines about the show or somehow slights or disparages it in an interview. I loved me some Blake. Thought he should have won once Melinda got knocked out. I appreciated that he tried to do new things. But he never, ever acted like he was too good for the show. And David Cook does act like that. All the damn time. He may not be trying to come off like a ridiculous tool, but that's how it reads to me. And that's why I don't like him. YMMV, as always.
Plus, he's incredibly unfortunate looking and I like pretty people, dammit. I take the subway to work every day, I don't need to come home and see busted fools on my TV.

If I hadn't just changed my tagline, kat. I love this.
