Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own
This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]
Great British Baking Show: I am SO impressed with the skills the bakers bring to the show! It's like the Olympic gymnastics - not only do they have to do something difficult, it has to look pretty!
I was happy with the very first person to be sent home - he got on my nerves - but now the field has been whittled down to five (at least the series I'm watching), each person sent home is going to hurt. I like all of them.
Toddson, if you want to watch online, oddly WETA had many more episodes up than PBS.org did. I haven't checked in a few days but last I saw WETA had all but the finale up, so that may be up now too. Though then I'll be sad because I won't have more :(
It's pretty good still on re-watch, as I learned last night.
I'm happy to take it a week at a time. They're down to the top five at this point in my viewing, so I'll let it play out. I just wish I had their skills - I'm competent, but I'm always thrilled when something comes out looking good.
Finale challenge -
What on earth was that with the signature bake? Hot dog buns filled with frosting?
Man, the British are weird sometimes.
The more people I talk to, the more I'm not sure why I didn't think that was weird at all! I mean, they are that shape, but not that kind of dough.
la la la ... haven't seen the finale yet ... one thing I don't think I'll ever understand is their passion for beetroot (that's beets, right?). They seem to use it for coloring, flavoring, thickening ... I mean, beets are fine, but they seem a little overly fond of it.
hah, it hadn't occurred to me that's what they looked like Brenda, but you're right. I was just confused about how they were supposed to look/taste. And I felt like in the finale, their showstoppers seemed way less intense than last years wedding cakes, which had to be super fancy?
Mostly I now want to do a lot of baking. And am sad when someone linked to an article about the "new season" starting in the UK that we won't get for like, years. (But I'm too lazy to figure out how to torrent or whatever the kids do to watch foreign tv these days)
If I remember correctly, the wedding cakes from last year (except the winning Frances's) were kind of disappointing. I remember one woman did a stamp with some text about love that she put on the cake. The second one I don't remember, but I do remember Frances doing something both festive and impressive. She always went for the super pretty, sometimes at the expense of the taste ... but she learned better.
