Great episode tonight. There were many, many dancers I loved. In no particular order:
Blonde girl who danced to "It's a Man's World: I was prepared to hate her with all the hair and the sexy and the teeny fedora, but she turned it out. Yes, there was too much hair flinging and floor writhing, but when she actually bothered to dance, it was lovely and amazing. She is work with-able.
Black haired girl dressed all in black - So I maybe loved her the most for pointing out how contemporary is not actually a thing. Bless you, little black haired dancer! And then her dancing was incredible. So strong and grounded and just everything. She's totally what Mia used to mean when she was on the panel talking about organic movement. And not a hair fling in the whole routine. I've already watched it back twice and I'm sure I'll watch it again.
Blonde Joffrey Dancer - So light and gorgeous. And those feet! Exquisite feet on this one. Guest judge was bursting out of his seams and he should be because she did the Joffrey proud. Turn out of the heavens on that one.
Mary Poppins - Popping to Sade? Yes! Work, dammit. And the impromptu improv with Fik Shun was to die. He loooves her and so do I. I don't know if she can do anything else but I hope the judges give her as much slack as they give to the male b-boys in terms of growth arc. She's dope.
Cute face tapper girl - I enjoyed the heck out of her tap routine. She pulled like a quadruple turn at the end of that routine in tap shoes. Solid! And I peeped her in the choreo round smashing it, so clearly she is cross trained. Now that we've had a great male tapper (Aaron), it's time we had a great female one.
I wasn't as enamored of either the wannabe Miley or the girl who overcame an eating disorder as the judges were. They were very pleasant dancers, but I found them both lacking the "It" thing. I can't see either of them making it through Pasadena Week (still hate it!) The Miami ballet boy who got cut just prior to green mile has major technique, but he's not Chehon or Danny. Really, who is, though? I enjoyed the girl from the Santiago ballet immensely. The boy was a decent partner, but not a standout, although I'll agree with Nigel that it wasn't choreo designed to let him shine. I'm glad they both got put through.
I thought the girl with alopecia was inspiring and quite a talented dancer. Her center was a little off on some of her turns, but that might've been nerves. But since I'm already on the express bus to hell for talking about people, I'll just state that I can't imagine her on this show. The look just would not work for anything but kinda weird Sonya/Mia/Mark contemporary/jazz dances. I'm sure she could turn it out in a Rhumba or in hip hop but not in a way that would make teeny-boppers want to vote for her. I am glad she'll go on to Vegas. Umm, I mean, Pasadena. Boo!
I always enjoy Christina Applegate on the panel because of how much she loves dance and dancers. But I'm ready for some Miss Debbie Allen!
