Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own
This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]
I can't believe that was the final performance show. I miss SYTYCD already.
Those jewels on Cat’s dress look like colorful little tumors and the bottom fringe is atrocious and why is it black but I am loving the hair, make up, and accessories. I’ll call it a wash on this week’s Cat fashion check in.
Dance Ins: I feel like these four have done the same dance ins every week. Somehow, although individually, I like all these dancers, I’m underwhelmed by this group as a top 4. I miss Paul!
Pau Pau! Oh, hit me right where I live, SYTYCD. And Gabby Douglas. Well, that’s just nifty. However, watching gymnasts dance is painful, so I don’t know what she knows about dance, but she sure looks pretty in yellow and the weave is much improved. Well done on the style front, tiny gymnast.
Amy and Aaron/Jazz/Primitive/Richard Vission vs. Luciana - Ray Leeper. Hmmm. Well, at least it’s not Tasty, right? I wish they’d brought back Mark instead. So Ray says it’s fusion, huh? What is it fused with? Costuming is totally working for me right off the bat, even though Aarons fake tattoo sleeve is far from flesh colored. Snaps up, ‘hos. Ummm, Amy was turning it out. Work! I really liked the choreography. It was tricky, tricky. Amy wanted to show America that Jasmine’s not the only one with legs and she achieved that. She was so crisp and had amazing attack (Thanks, Mary!). Her extensions and toe point . . . out of this world. Aaron seemed oddly constrained at the beginning. I think his shoulder is still affecting his range of motion. And he did kind of get relegated to forklifting her all around during the middle of that routine. Paula tried to spin it as Aaron being a generous partner, but honestly, there was a section in the middle where he wasn’t really being asked to do more than just lift Amy up or throw her somewhere. Definite props, though, for the double turn in attitude. As the judges noted, they both nailed it and were perfectly in synch. Well done, kids. Not up there with the best of them, but a solid effort.
Now we see if Fik Shun can handle his big woman!!
Hmm, let’s see. Having Peanut dance a gorgeous piece with Amy or having the smush faced nightmare that is Malece sucking up my tv time with her mismatched, no chemistry having partner Jade…decisions, decisions. Let’s hope Cat’s next offered choice isn’t so obvious.
Jasmine and Fik Shun/Contemporary/Spiegel Im Spiegel/Angela Joffe & Vadim Gluzman – I will be fascinated to see what Peanut does with this mismatched pair. Usually, he works with a big/tiny (big dude/tiny girl) and has a lot of fun making the big fling the tiny around. That will not work here. So, I thought this was beautiful and haunting. I bought the whole underwater thing, the waves of motion. And from the very beginning when they were just standing on the stage in a close embrace, they had amazing chemistry. More than Fik Shun has had with anyone on the show. Jasmine is magic. I think she makes everything better and I could stare at her plié in second position all day long. Fik Shun was better here than I expected him to be. He partnered Jasmine very well. His plié in second wasn’t too shabby. And while his feet and toe point left something to be desired, it was improved from what I’ve seen of him all season. I don’t think it was standing ovation good, but it was absolutely as good as Aaron and Amy’s first dance. The only thing I really didn’t appreciate was when Fik Shun was rolling on the ground for a couple of counts while Jasmine did pirouettes behind him, but it was quick and if you have a dancer like Jasmine, how can you not give her a good turn sequence?
Gabby Douglas is a useless judge. Pau Pau is a better judge on SYTYCD than she ever was on Idol and that’s a true fact.
Aaron and Melinda/Tap/When I Was Your Man/Bruno Mars - Yay! I love this idea, letting the dancers choose the style. Anthony Marjorato is such a baby face. Y’all, I always forget that Aaron is primarily a tapper because he’s so good in other stuff. I don’t know enough about tap to comment (continued...)
( continues...) intelligently, but that never stopped me before, so let’s go! I’m sure it was probably difficult, but I thought the whole thing looked ridiculous. Lyrical Tap? Umm, no thank you. And it seemed like Melinda was the featured performer and Aaron was the back up. She had all the flashy moves and turns. But huge props for Aaron being the first tapper to reach the finale. Nigel must be over the moon. Mary talked about the complex rhythms but I felt like I couldn’t even hear them over the music. I don’t know. I would’ve liked something more traditional.
Jasmine and Comfort/Hip Hop/Run the World (Girls)/Beyonce – Didn’t Jasmine dance hip hop with Cyrus? I don’t see this choice as that much of a surprise. I actually love that she choose not her own style and choose a same sex pairing. Bad ass. If she pulls it off, she looks like a risk taking genius. She’ll have to go some to keep up with Comfort, though. That girl is a beast in hip hop. I’m praying for a Paul performance here. NappyTab and bikes? Hold me. I’m scared. But, points for the excellent deployment of Beyonce. Y’all, Comfort is so, so serious. Just fierceness all over that stage. That choreo was super fun. I thought Comfort outdanced Jasmine, but that was always gonna happen. Jasmine put it down, though. She was hard hitting. I feel like her limbs get a little bit away from her sometimes in hip hop and there was a section where they bumped into each other which pointed up some spacing issues that kind of ran through the routine, but it was fun and different and as Nigel noted was a big old “Bring it” to the other contestants.
Amy and Fik Shun/Tango-Paso/Hazardous Zero Signal/PP Music - Miriam and Leonardo are so sexy. I would love to see them as guest performers on a show! First of all, all I could think about with that costuming for Fik shun was the Prince Shirts vs. Blouses Dave Chappelle routine. I appreciate Amy’s ability to hold her own weight because Fik Shun was never really set during any of the lifts that they did. Lots of feet sliding around and getting set well into the lift. I just can’t really enjoy Fik Shun in ballroom. The posture is so wrong. The pancake hands are just wrong. He needs to open more through the chest. He needs to keep his shoulders down. His footwork is off. And the huffing and puffing, which I guess was supposed to be serious Paso face, was just wrong. Amy was lovely here, good clean lines and very strong. But it was a bad dance.
Jasmine Solo/Ready for Love/India.Arie – Boo, show. We almost made it to the end without Cyrus sob story. The just couldn’t resist. This is the best solo I’ve seen her do. Much more controlled. The gorgeous plié in second was back! Hello, my old friend. And that one turn she did into a leg extension with her leg at a perfect 180 degrees? Insane. Also, she was turning it out in that Ciara video. No wonder she chose hip hop. I don’t buy that they weren’t going to put her in the Top 20 when they had the Cyrus angle sitting right there. I do buy that they had all their eggs in Jasmine #1’s basket once the season began and then Other Jasmine came out and ate her lunch.
Love how much Cat loves the dancers. Always.
Jasmine and Aaron/Samba/Can’t Touch It/Ricki Lee - C’mon, Dmitri. Deliver the sexy like I know you can. Hmm, so I didn’t care for it. I didn’t think either of them had the hip action that I would’ve liked to see, especially not Aaron. I just love it when Mary brings the technical knowledge. And the skirt thing was just unfortunate. It can happen. I think they dealt with it about as well as they could. Like Nigel, I felt that they lacked chemistry. And yes, the choreo just did not sit well on them. Maybe they were intimidated by the staircase? I don’t know what it was, but it was off and it was bad. They’re still my favorites for the win, though.
Fik Shun Solo/Gangnam Style/Psy – Money. Right from the jump putting on the checkerboard sunglasses. Work, young man! You can totally tell that he used to be a street performer. He knows how to move the crowd. He (continued...)
( continues...) even made Paula’s metaphors make sense. Magic!
Amy Solo/Unchained Melody/The Righteous Brothers – She’s beautiful but the choreography was a mess. Lots of reaching out into the nothingness and shaking her fists. She also had a lot of lovely technique and what a center, just drilled down on those turns. Still, I didn’t like it as much as I liked Jasmine’s.
Fik Shun and Twitch/Hip Hop/Hello Good Morning/Diddy Dirty Money feat. Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross – Aww, yeah. I expect it to be broughten. Luther Brown. They should’ve let Comfort choreograph it. Also, I totally thought they were going to dance to Mercy because they were saying “Swerve” so much so the Diddy track threw me a little bit just at the beginning. Twitch looked like he was out there dancing with his son. So cute, they were, but it was just so incongruous. They both tore it down. The old man step was classic. Ha! Nigel called them Twitch and Twitch, Jr. Spot on, my friend. Spot on. They are just so frikkin’ adorable together. My cheeks hurt from smiling.
Aaron Solo/You and I both/Jason Mraz – He’s just a joy to watch. That’s all.
Amy and Robert/Contemporary/Say Something/A Great Big World - Stacey usually rises to the level of her dancers so this should be good. Was that a little dig from Cat about staying in her lane by choosing contemporary? I don’t have any words. I just . . . the one handed press up while he was on his knees is just not a possible thing. The connection between the two of them and the everything of it was ugh. I wasn’t a huge Robert fan during his season but he has done stunning work on the show this season. And Amy, I just can’t. Have loved her from the moment she stepped onto the stage and I love her still. That goes into the Best of cue for this season for sure.
God damn, they are working these kids this week. Poor noodles.
Aaron and Fik Shun/Broadway/The Jitters/Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Nooooooooooo! Tasty Broadway in the finale? Why does Nigel hate me so much? Nigel thinks it was reminiscent of Michael Kidd’s choreography. That’s a nice way to say copycat. I was bored. I think I might have looked away at one point. I suppose we were meant to be wowed by the moving sidewalk, but I was underwhelmed. The choreography did not seem that challenging. And I continue to think that Aaron’s range of motion is impaired by whatever is going on with his shoulder.
Amy and Jasmine/Jazz/The Diva Dance/Eric Serra - Mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it already. I pre-emptively love it. Siamese twins from the fierce jungles of Saturn. I love this crazy kid. Who won that dance clash of the titans? We all did, dance fans. We all did. That was crazy good. These two ladies are so evenly matched. Technically solid. Great performance quality. Just good. They put in work every time. I don’t even think I can describe what they were doing because it was all Mark-ified, but I wanted to keep watching it. And using the music from The Fifth Element? Oh, Mark. I heart you.
Who will win?
Hell if I know. Coming in, I had it as a lock for Aaron and a toss up for the girls. I still think it’s a complete toss up for the girls. I’d give the edge to Jasmine, but Amy is also exquisite. And Aaron had kind of a rough night of dancing while Fik Shun, Tango-Paso aside, had a very good night. So who knows.
My heart picks Aaron and Jasmine, like I have pretty much the whole season, but it’s wide open. Glad they held off so long on trying to kill the kids through overdancing.
Wow, I loved the tap number. That one moment where the pirouette in silence (aside from the music) was shocking and brilliant.
Very happy with the dancing so far [half an hour in, ftr], but that really got me.
Did not care for the Tango Doble or whatever that was. Conceptually, I didn't get what the choreography was going for and didn't love how they danced it, either of them.
Probably my favorite Jasmine solo. There isn't a hugely dramatic change that I can pin down, but she is so much more compelling to watch than back in auditions and Vegas. Wonderful.
I really liked the Samba choreography - basics, woo-hoo! Too bad they didn't really pull it off. So to speak.
Damn, Fik-shun. Can he solo or what?
Fik-shun + Twitch = just delightful!
