Oh, yeah. There was this time I was pinned down by this guy that played left tackle for varsity... Well, at least he used to before he was a vampire... Anyway, he had this really, really thick neck, and all I had was a little, little Exact-O knife ... You're not loving this story.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

My hair grows so ridiculously fast that I can't ever get too upset about it, because I can change it completely in less than a year.

But yeah on the personal style. And to me, the stuff they want is just so blah. I can agree on changing some of the forms and whatnot, but there should still be some me in there. So like, I've tried to not be so scared to show waist, even though I think it looks bad. Obviously anything big enough to obscure my waist can only make me look bigger than I am. But I still feel a little weird about it, and I think I have to learn about waistlines.

I think maybe when I wear the dress for the festival I'll post a self-pic so you guys can see it. And I'm still wearing my Doc Martens, damnit.

Thrive to spite them

I've tried to be more adventurous when picking out clothes because I'd see stuff and think "I like it, but I could never wear it". So I make it a point to try one at least 1 thing I like but "isn't me".

And it turns out there's a lot of stuff out there that is me. Of course there's a lot of stuff I try on that doesn't look good.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I love Stacy and Clinton. I want them to come live with me and make me look pretty. I think so many of the people who come on the show are so clueless (or have such appalling taste) that the show is usually Dressing Yourself 101, rather than anything more advanced.

The haircuts usually just make me think "I would never maintain that at home."

"We have trust issues." Mylar

The thing about What Not to Wear, though, is that nobody forces you to go on it. It's been on the air forever and if you want to know what it's all about, you can know. But if you agree to go on the show, then go on and get in the spirit of it. Get your not to wear on, you know? If you hate everything Clinton and Stacy choose for you, you can toss it all out and never wear any of it ever again. And I feel like Clinton and Stacy really do try. Like with this women from the show today, when she was so miserable and uncomfortable with the clothes she had picked out following their rules, they offered her all her old clothes back even steven. They even had them all packed up in her suitcases and ready to go. I think C&S do a fairly good job of trying to get to know the women who come on the show and tailoring their rules to what they want to look like, if these women let themselves be known, but yeah, they are very much in the mainstream of fashion. If you want quirky, well, they don't do quirk. I don't mind the pop pyschology of it all because again, you knew the job was dangerous when you took it and all that.

Ted Gibson is the hair guy and I love him so, so much. The same friend who works for Style for Hire goes to his salon in NYC and she went there even before he got on the show. She doesn't go to Ted (because that is bank!). She goes to Eugene. And Eugene is also fabulous. The folks in that salon really listen to their clients and give them what they want rather than all short, all the time (which was my main problem with Nick - although I really liked Nick, too) Carmindy is a fave of mine also. I'm not crazy about how she does her own make up but I think she always makes the makeover candidates look good and fairly natural. And she gives them stuff that they might actually be able to do at home, not some 20 step beauty regime with 17 different kinds of product. I appreciate that.

I understand the fear of cutting your hair off amongst black women because there is so much tied up in the black hair experience, especially long hair - who has it and who doesn't and how long can your hair actually get and on and on. In some circles getting even an inch trimmed off is viewed as a crime against humanity. Also, it can take a really long time for hair to grow back and if you have relaxed hair, there is the chance of breakage, etc. Hair cutting is a thing. I've never really understood it for other women but that's just because I assume that other people's hair grows faster, but I could be totally wrong about that.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I totally have a haircut right now that I love but can't maintain at home. I only have had the opportunity to try once, and I still didn't have the hours it was going to take to dry properly before I flatironed. So it didn't look great. I will try again at home when the humidity isn't so bad. It might be I just need practice.

I realize that was nattery, but can't help it.

I think I probably have bad taste. But I can't tell, because I have it. And I don't think training would help me. I could learn to see what I was supposed to like but I don't think I could learn to like it.

I have seen bad taste on that show. I guarantee you don't have it.

Art Crawl!!!

Breaking Pointe: I don't know - it certainly seems like the Ballet Manager cast her the way she did just so that she would be divided in her obsessiveness. (It's interesting that the night of the opener she was the only one who had tempo difficulties.)

information libertarian

It turns out there's tons of full episodes of What Not To Wear on Youtube. And Lizzie the incredibly nerdy biofuels scientist is possibly the cutest person ever on the show. And they were so sweet, trying really really hard to explain things in a language she could make at least a little sense of. And her voice! She's like a cartoon character! [link]
