Any idea what is objectionable about a spelling bee? Any word about the Indian kid from Utah? I read about him in the nytimes a while back.

According to one of the Spelling Bee blogs I've been following, "the contest has drawn a good sized crowd of protesters who are demanding an increase in the number of words that are spelled phonetically. I kid you not."

I reported yesterday (in Bitches, I think) that there was a small group of people outside the hotel protesting the spelling bee. Seemingly, one of them got stabbed a little while ago.
I read here that it's a group for the phonetic spelling of words.

I think it's funny that some people care enough about phonetic spelling to actually protest. It's like that West Wing episode where Josh and CJ meet the upside down map people.
