Doesn't feel like something new. It feels like an established pattern.
I have a feeling this is old ground. At some point, the catatonic escape of tiny!Sam turned into escapism, and there was probably some raucous fights in the days leading up to his departure.
I think it fell into place naturally as part of his role as caretaker to his younger brother.
