I have a feeling this is old ground. At some point, the catatonic escape of tiny!Sam turned into escapism, and there was probably some raucous fights in the days leading up to his departure.

It felt like an old pattern, here. I've only just started watching in the past few weeks, and I've already noticed that Dean kind of takes on a lot of the 'Mom' roles.
I think it's established pattern too. Dean probably caved more to John than he is now, but the groundwork was there.
