See, I think cloth diapers look complicated at first, but once you have a few, they really aren't. I think Plei has tried more kinds than I have, but if she can't answer all your questions, let me know!
[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

The Philadelphia ready-to-eat cheesecake filling Andi was talking about last night has three primary ingredients on the list. cream cheese spread, sugar and water. There are some preservatives (Xanthan gum mostly), and the cream cheese spread ingredients take up most of the list in parentheses.
Oddly enough, no eggs and no HFCS.
Also? too tempting for this diabetic. Argh.
Made my own with my stick blender and Splenda. Not bad, but I need to experiment.
Holds in poop + is washable, mostly. And "is more affordable than disposables," though the environmental impact is an issue too. (Which is why we're not going with a diaper service.)
I'd suggest getting a few different types, then. You can get a lot of use out of prefolds, especially in the early months (and the forums at Diaperpin have a lot of fold suggestions), but it'd probably be worth having a few pocket diapers for babysitters or leaving the house. I'd probably hold off on a mass pocket purchase until the rapid growth stops--we started buying pockets at about 8 months, and most of the ones we got her still fit. For one-size pockets, I've had good luck with the BumGenius. For one-size fitteds (that make GREAT overnight diapers), I'm still a fan of the Growing Greens hemp diapers.

That's the impression I get from the internets generally.
We're planning a Costco run in the next week or so for economy size cases of prefolds and baby wipes etc. And then to Babys'R'Us for some Snappis.
I've probably said this before, but I'm impressed with those of you choosing the washable diaper option. I know that I would likely throw out more than I would wash, if I tried to do that.

Probably a stupid question, but why does a diaper service create more of an environmental impact?
What brand of prefolds does Costco carry? Avoid Gerber, stick with diaper service quality prefolds.
Cloth wipes, by the way, are great. I don't like the Kissaluvs (sp?) diaper, but I *love* their wipe.
Snappis rule.

I read it as being more affordable than a diaper service.

Pollution from the trucks, mostly, and industrial-sized washing machines use more water than home models.
(Truthfully, the numbers can be rigged either way -- cloth diapers use more water, disposables create more landfill waste. Personally, I fall down on the less-landfill-waste-is-good side of the equation, plus I just spent a ridiculous amount of money on a washer & dryer, so paying someone else to wash my diapers is just not going to happen.)

I don't actually know -- they don't list most of their products online. We'll find out when we get there.
Speaking of cheesecake, they have this thing here called a quesito. It's a pastry filled with creamcheese and it has a sort of sweet, crunchy outside. It's probably a million calories, but very delicious.
Oh, man, we discovered those in Puerto Rico, too!!! So. Fucking. Good. It's like the result of an unholy union between a canoli and a cheese danish.
I love the tub o'cheesecake filling. For all the above listed reasons. I bought one to make into a cheesecake but it never made it to the pie shell. I still have the pieshell and I'm tempted to whip up some banana pudding into a banana cream pie.
I also need a quick & easy recipe for banana bread/muffins because I've got bananas ready to go.
Teppy, I hope you're ok. I say panic because that's what I'd do.
