I still remember Willingham as the guy who did the illustrations for all those Dungeons & Dragons modules back in the early 80s.

Oh yeah, but without him running it, and Comico being crazy, it would have done a lot better. He eventually sold the rights to comico, which promptly distingerated.
What was interesting is that I think it was the only comic that ever had an official x-rated spinoff about the sex lives of the characters...

Wow - I'd forgotten that he did the Elementals...I was so sad when Comico got bought out and the series went to hell, since I'd just been introduced to it by a friend who had all the issues. After the financial troubles, they started with the 'Fathom Sex Special #25' and I wasn't interested anymore.
I also miss Piranha Press' 'Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children'.

If there's a market for Vertigo, then I'd think there's a market for smart hero stuff. Alan Moore's comics seem to be doing okay.

Oh, there's a few things that are pretty sharp: Authority, Planetary and Starman (some of which have ended, but all of which I'm reading in graphic novel form so DON'T TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS DAMN IT!!!) Promethea, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Hunter.
Oh, and BHP, Fables is about how the land the Fairy Tales come from gets overrun by an evil force, so all of them are forced to relocate to New York City. It's bloody brilliant.
